The programme on future and emerging technologies (FET) forms part of the first ‘Excellent Science’ pillar of Horizon 2020. This programme funds collaborative research projects in the long term in order to respond to current and future technological challenges. The programme covers information and communication technologies but also other scientific domains.

The FET programme is made up of three main instruments:

  • FET Open is a bottom-up approach which aims at exploring visionary and promising ideas which are likely to respond to Europe's long-term challenges. The FET Open call is open throughout the year and uses a simplified submission procedure.
  • FET Proactive encourages fundamental research as several initiatives centred around original unconventional themes. Themed calls are launched several times a year with the aim of financing medium-sized research projects.
  • Finally, leading initiatives in the domain of FET or FET Flagships are large-scale multidisciplinary research initiatives which aim at achieving unifying objectives. In concrete terms, these are consortia of public and private bodies which pool their resources and savoir-faire. Up until now, two FET Flagships have been launched, in 2013: Human Brain Project and GRAPHENE Flagship.
